As you go about the process of building your network marketing business, are you selective about who you choose to work with and about who you choose to invite to join your team? Or do you accept anyone, regardless of the level of enthusiasm or fit that they may bring?

Whether you are brand new to building your business or even if you have been around a while, this is a key area for you to pay attention to. It’s very easy to start to feel needy and become indiscriminate in terms of who you invite to look at your opportunity and become part of your team. But if you want to build a business with lasting success, just as it would be true for any other type of business, you want to surround yourself with good people.

Especially when you are first starting out, you want to be very focused on assembling the best team possible. Perhaps the most important person you will ever recruit is your very first team member, the very first person in your down-line. Why is that? Because when you first start out, your own down-line is empty, so the first person who joins your team is going to have to help you build your team.

So invite wisely. The better job you do of finding strong leaders you want to work with as part of your team, the better your results are going to be. And remember, since it is your business that you are building, you get to choose who you would like to work with.

Here are 3 simple tips to help you surround yourself with the best people possible as you build your team.

  1. Get crystal clear about who you want on your team. What are the most important qualities you are looking for in your ideal team member? Write them out. This can be a very powerful exercise and it helps you get crystal clear about who you are looking for. How important is enthusiasm? What about persistence? Are you looking for an action taker, a leader, or a follower? How about someone who is willing to invest in themselves and their business? Do you want someone with prior MLM experience or do you care?
  2. Pay attention to your circle of influence. If you are like most people, when you start out, you will feel a strong hesitation to approach your warm market. Yet, it’s with the people you already know that you have the most influence and because you know them, you should already have a pretty good idea whether or not they are a good match for the type of team member you are after. For the ones who are, invite them to take a look. What’s the worst that can happen?
  3. Demonstrate the qualities you are after. Remember, by law of attraction, like attracts like. So the best way to ensure you are attracting people with the qualities you are after is by being the embodiment of those qualities yourself. Would you rather work with an energy vampire who will never lead him or herself and who will always drag you down? Or would you rather work with a high energy, take-no-prisoners leader who does whatever it takes to be successful?
